As the year draws to a close, work is slowing down for me and many other roofers around the country. I have just a couple more weeks of roof repair jobs as my customers also prepare to hunker down for the Christmas break without the concern of leaking roofing.
This time of year I also begin to look forward to the new season and plan for next years’ projects. There has been a real buzz about green roofing amongst my customers and many are seeking advice for their green roofing projects ideas. In London, space is limited, particularly within the city and those who are without a garden are looking to create green spaces, even if it is just to provide a good view from the back windows.
Green roofing projects are not slowing in popularity by any stretch.
They are not going to be a ‘fad’ or a here-today-gone-tomorrow fashion statement. I can see green roof installation becoming the future of flat roofing, particularly within urban environments.
The house-building market is also on the increase and one developer I spoke to a week or so ago commented that his architects had suggested green roofing projects as an integral part of the initial development. This is great news for the environment and also from an aesthetic point of view within modern housing estates.
Green roofing can become an integral part of the property and can also be used as a roof garden area once the roof deck has been strengthened to accommodate the extra weight. You should always have a survey if you plan any green roofing projects as the load bearing capacity needs to be up to four times greater than that of a standard flat roof.
There are companies that specialise in green roofing projects and can provide advice, materials and also installation if you are not up for a DIY project. Although green roofing is not a difficult undertaking, there is a certain set of procedures you should follow to ensure the correct drainage layers and membranes are laid. It is always a good idea to glean as much advice as you possibly can before you even begin to plan your green roofing projects.
